Gerrards of London: A long standing taxidermy firm of note founded in 1850, that later branched into being a film hire company ‘Gerrard Hire ltd’ The workshops famously featured in Alfred Hitchcocks 1955 film ‘The Man Who Knew Too Much’ but they are probably most fondly remembered for supplying the taxidermy in the 1970’s sit com ‘Steptoe & Son’ which featured much taxidermy. One of the firms other iconic mounts was the greyhound ‘Mick the Miller ‘which is still on display in the Natural History Museum at Tring.
Eventually the firm finally closed its doors in 1992, making this one of the longest standing of all the Victorian taxidermy firms. It was then these glass eyes were purchased directly from Miss Gillet the then and last owner.

Notes: The founder Edward Gerrard was a friend of Charles Darwin, his workshops became well known amongst hunters, naturalists, collectors, amongst their many clients were the British Museum.
