The polished oak shield stamped to verso ‘P Spicer & Sons Taxidermists Leamington’ with serial number 203.
The mask is photographed here, held in what was Spicer’s very own workshop vice. I acquired this vice when I purchased Spicer’s workshops in Leamington Spa some years ago, and now use the vice in my own workshop.
The vice can be seen illustrated in my book ‘A Record of Spicer’s’ published in 2001, on pages 94, 95 and page 99 where it is illustrated holding an Otter mask! in the finishing workroom of Spicer’s.
Unfortunately, the vice is not for sale, just the otter mask.

Condition of mask: There is some old damage to an area of the throat, and one canine is broken, probably caused during the hunt. The mask has naturally faded over the years, but presents well, having been sympathetically cleaned, with minor repairs to the gums. Originally there would have been an ivorine plaque to the front of the shield detailing the hunt, but this has long gone. Otherwise, a great mask from one of the greatest taxidermists.
