Charles Pillet (1869 – 1960). A French sculptor and engraver, born in Paris. Pillet was a pupil of Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu and Jules-Clément Chaplain. He won his first Grand Prix de Rome for his engraved medals in 1890. He became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1898.
This relief displays a classic Art Nouveau allegorical scene, depicting a partially draped seated woman holding a palm branch in her lower hand while lifting her other arm to grasp an oak branch from a tree above her.
This specific relief design was utilized by the prominent French newspaper Le Petit Journal around 1900 as a prestigious award or commemorative medal plaque.
