The Biram Anemometer was invented in 1844 by Benjamin Biram (1804-1857), to determine the volume of air entering or exiting mine shafts. Benjamin Biram was house steward to the Earl Fitzwilliam, who owned several coal mines in South Yorkshire, England.
Thomas Armstrong & Brothers of Manchester. A famous watch and clockmaking family business that was founded in 1825 by Joseph Armstrong, and followed by 2 of his 13 children. On their father’s retirement these two brothers then formed a partnership changing the name of the business to ‘Thomas Armstrong & Brother’ and by 1860, opening a second retail outlet at 80 Deansgate, Manchester.
