Oil on board in its original gilt frame with gilt plaque attached “Poelenburg N 87″ which refers to the artist’s name and a catalogue number from a previous collection. Unsigned. Circa 1630.

Condition: Painting generally dirty with some tiny losses of paint, with one larger dent/loss of paint to a figure. The frame with possible later gilt finish now tarnished and wearing thin in places, but overall, a great looking atmospheric oil painting with that elusive faded country house look.

Cornelis van Poelenburgh (1594 – 1667), was a Dutch landscape painter and draughtsman. He was the leading representative of the first generation of Dutch landscape painters who were active in Rome in the early 17th century. He painted landscapes often with nudes, nymphs, religious, or mythical figures sometimes amongst classical ruins, in a style that would later be evident in some of the works of Claude Lorraine.
